foreverdawning: Collection of 18th century shoes from the film Marie Antoinette (2006) (marie shoes)
I learned how to sew and I made my own skirt using a pattern. It took me about a month but I finished it this past Friday. Sometimes I go into my closet just to look at the skirt. Maybe I'll work up the nerve to wear it. I'm so afraid that if I put it on I'll somehow pour thirty metric tons of bleach on it before I leave the house. I have to keep reminding myself that clothes were meant to be worn.

More Masks!

foreverdawning: Caroline "Cool Girl" from Snotgirl (caroline1)
I just bought some more disposable masks. I hate washing masks so I hardly ever use my cotton ones. I love these new disposable masks I've bought because they have little flower patterns on them. Here's a picture of the one I'm wearing now:

Flower Mask
Anyway, I'm going to keep wearing my mask for a long time. I hope masks stay required on airplanes because people are gross. Maybe we should've been following the Asians the whole time.

I am now in two book clubs and unfortunately they happened to meet on the same day Wednesday.  One of them is at the parish library I volunteer at which is really interesting. We're reading Screwtape Letters and I'm getting really behind. I need to get that book pronto.

But this month at the Holocaust museum I work at we decided to read Anne Frank's diary since her birthday is June 12th. If she had lived she would be turning 92. And we had a special guest, someone who is second cousins with Anne Frank. She explained her side of the family (Edith Frank's side AKA Anne's mother) and how their side was able to escape to Peru and the United States. On the Frank House's website it says they tried to escape to the US but Edith's brother was only allowed to take one person. That's why they went to the Netherlands. Also this lady was about 91 years old and so sweet and cute. I was surprised how well she was using zoom and moving around the room to grab pictures. She showed us the picture of Anne Frank's wedding and pointed out her parents for us. All around, very informative and interesting life story. I wish I had better questions for her.

I had a chance to re-read Anne Frank's diary as an adult which was really nice. I was able to relate more to Anne's mother and older sister and was better able to understand their perspectives. Anne's worldview was really small and she and her mother often butted heads and as an eighth grader reading this I completely related to Anne. I didn't even consider how the mom was feeling in that situation and how stressed she'd be. I also felt bad for Margot having to share her room with her parents and becoming reserved. I wish Margot Frank's diary had been recovered so we could see her perspective on the exact same situation from an older teenage perspective.

I think my laptop has officially gone kaput this time. This is the second laptop that's died out on me. It's probably the fact I keep it plugged in all night. Luckily, my laptop was gracious enough to die at the library so I was able to get a lot of work done anyway.

I recently applied to a new job as a parole officer for minors in my county. Everyone thinks it's a bad idea but it's salaried and they said they would train me on the spot. I'm tired of not making any money. It's incredibly frustrating.

Anyway, I mostly made this post in case y'all were wondering where I've gone: Nowhere. I just have a busted laptop (again!)

Choo-Choo

foreverdawning: Suggestive image of a woman thumbing a book (book)
I'm vaccinated fully now! I just have to wait two weeks for it to really kick in. I'll feel more comfortable taking public transport in the next few weeks. I recently got a student discount bus pass so now all my rides are $0.60; I'm saving the planet one train ride at a time.

Haven't been reading any Twilight books lately since I haven't really been in the mood. I started reading How to Be Antiracist by Kendi Ibram X. It's really good so far. I had my reservations on the first few chapters, but he makes excellent points and managed to change my perspective. I think those first few chapters are to disarm white readers into giving the book a shot, but the points made are valid and hold weight. I'm more than half way finished. This is my first real audio book (My first one was the audiobook was the last book in the Series of Unfortunate Events books.)

I don't think I'm going to become a regular audiobook listener. I run into the same problem I have with podcasts: I stop paying attention. Reading the words on the page is more intimate and important to me. I like to imagine the characters' inflections and emotions behind their words. But this book is nonfiction and read in the author's own voice so it feels more authentic this way.

Speaking of, I think I converted another person to get on the Libby app. While I was volunteering at the Holocaust museum another volunteer named Rhonda was talking to me about how often she reads audiobooks and that she buys a lot of books from Audible. I let her know that I exclusively read books for free either pirated or from the library and told her about Libby and that she only needs a library card to listen to them. She seemed really excited about it since with Audible you get one book a month included in your $8 monthly charge and you have to purchase all other books. That seems extremely wack, especially for someone like Rhonda who goes through audiobooks quickly. I myself didn't think two weeks was enough to get through this book I'm reading but I'm almost finished with five days to spare.

Anyway, I hope all of you are utilizing the library and slowly taking apart Amaz*n brick by brick with me.

I decided I wanted to start volunteering this year so I reached out to the local Holocaust museum and I was accepted! I realized I don't know nearly enough about history in general to be able to answer any questions so I'm currently at the library trying to read up on World War 2 and Jewish history.

Before I got the official acceptance email I had to do two zoom calls as a group with the other potential volunteers and that was about two and a half weeks ago? I was so nervous that they didn't want me as a volunteer anymore that I started persistently and (I'm sure) annoyingly pestering them all day. I'm glad to be on the volunteer team anyway.

Speaking of good deeds if you have any spare cash consider donating to the Quileute People's Move to Higher Ground Project. Right now the Quileute' houses and elementary school are in a major tsunami and flood zone. And if you're interested in a Twilight zine, I helped organize the unofficial Higher Ground zine. If you want a copy, all you need to do is send proof that you donated to the Move to Higher Ground project. You can read more about it on the tumblr page.

HBO Max

foreverdawning: Rosalie Hale (portrayed by Nikki Reed) smiling (Default)
I went ahead and re subscribed to Hulu and I remembered the HBO Max password. I've been thoroughly obsessed with Westworld (I'm late, I know.) I like Westworld a lot but I wish they kept the story more contained.
Spoilers for seasons 1-3 of Westworld ) Anyway, I'm definitely going to have to incorporate elements of Westworld in a Twilight fic sometime.

Cold

foreverdawning: Image of Rosalie from Twilight with dark eyes (rosie4)

So I do live in Texas and I barely got power back. It’s been so chilly and I’ve been wearing my coat for days on end. The good thing is it’s been easy for me to read without the distractions of electricity. So that’s been fun. I made a time lapse of myself weaving a bookmark and I’m linking it here

Anyway, please make sure you donate to the Move to Higher Ground Project if you’d like a copy of the digital Twilight fanzine I helped put together. Here’s a post detailing how to get access: link

My parents both tested positive for the virus a few days ago while on "vacation" visiting my grandmother. Since they came home I've been living in a hotel and not going home. Thankfully this hotel I'm staying at has a washing machine so I'm able to do laundry there and not have to find the nearest coin operated laundromat.

I'm just thankful I'm working and not going insane by myself in a hotel room.

So I went into work on Sunday not feeling well (I'd been there Thursday, Friday, Saturday already). I needed to go home. I felt awful but more in a stomach bug sort of way. I decided to go home because my stomach was in knots it just also so happened I felt a bit warm. I get tested yesterday 8:30 AM and I'm waiting to hear what the result is. I don't think I have the virus but I still wanted to be sure.

Also...the stick in the nose made my eyes water. The nurse was like "relax" ... relax? There's a foreign object inside my baby sized nose.

Anyway, I'm currently posting to avoid doing schoolwork so I should probably get back to it. As my friend said "Wish for positive vibes and negative results."

I started a new system with the kids this week. Since class is starting for me this week it's of the upmost importance that I am not late so I devised a point system to reward the children for getting out the door on-time.

I based the point system off of the point system they made us do in elementary and middle school. The idea is that you're supposed to teach children consequences for their actions and all that boring stuff. After a few attempts and failures at implementing the point game, I finally have it down to a science.

How the point system works )

Books

foreverdawning: Rosalie Hale (portrayed by Nikki Reed) smiling (Default)
I've been slowly but steadily getting through Pride and Prejudice. It's taken a bit of a lull in the story now after Mr. Darcy's admittance that he's in love with Elizabeth and she's returned home. Now it's a bit boring to read about the local drama that's unfolding when I'm wondering what Mr. Darcy is up to and what's going to happen when Jane finds out about Mr. Bingley. But if I'm not mistaken I'm on Chapter 42, so I'm more than half way finished.

Even though I'm still working through Pride and Prejudice, I just purchased an African American art book from Half Priced Books. I haven't started it yet but still looking forward to it. It's funny because I apparently went on Black Friday and had totally forgotten that there were deals and got 20% off.

I went to Galveston Island about a week ago with Seth and I had so much fun.
  • Punk show. I'm not a fan of punk at all but Seth is and he was so nice as to purchase tickets for me for both nights. It was the No Sleep Fest and despite it not being my typical kind of music I still had so much fun just seeing the small punk scene in Galveston. Funnily enough, I think I had more fun than Seth but we won't get into that
  • Shopping. We didn't really buy a whole lot while we were there. Seth bought a few Fiesta ware dishes for his parents and I bought Seth a few 70s Sci-Fi books
  • Galveston Book Fest. One of our former coworkers wrote a book and we decided to drop by. I purchased her book just to show my support and I'm trying to get through it but it is a toughie. It's well written just not my kind of genre.
Those were the highlights and I'm just really glad it happened.

New Pet

foreverdawning: Rosalie Hale (portrayed by Nikki Reed) smiling (Default)
I just bought a betta fish on a whim. I wasn't expecting to actually purchase an animal when I made my Petco run, but I was with my cousin's children and was talked into purchasing a tank and all the required supplies for a betta. Unfortunately, the tank I purchased is too small so I'm going to have to make an upgrade soon.

It's quite cute and I'm realizing there's a whole community online obsessed with bettas. I'm more excited about the aquatic plants. I'm hoping that they grow really well.

Firstly, I've finished Orange is the New Black and after bawling my eyes out I donated to their Poussey Washington Fund. It was inspired by one of the most beloved fictional characters on the show. There were so many ups and downs when it came to the storylines both in this season and the previous ones, but it was cathartic to get a concrete(ish) end to all of them.

I've been meaning to get to the third season of Glow but I want to be able to devote my whole attention to it since I know I'll be sucked into it completely.

Nannying has been going well. I took the kids to the science museum and looked at all the dinosaurs and even got to dig around for 'fossils.' I'm really starting to bond with them! I'm really excited about that since they both had a nanny previously who was really great and who the youngest one had known her entire life. I still get compared to her....constantly....but the kids do like me so far. Now when school starts that might change a bit.

I've also been an assistant/manager for an up and coming rapper in Dallas. We had a long conversation today about his timeline for the year and the release of his new album. I've been pushing him to complete it for awhile but not as much as I should've. He told me it takes about three hours for him to get a song done so we should be getting ready for photographs and promos by the end of this month. Without the music, there's really not a lot for me to do. I could work on concept work myself if I had some sort of idea about how the rest of his tracks are going to go but creative freedom is really important. Not only that, but I suspect he wants to keep it a secret until it's perfect. He'll have to break out of that habit.

--

I just realized I forgot to mention: I went to the second hand store and bought a Twilight shirt with a picture of Robert Pattinson as Edward and the phrase "You don't scare me." I've never been happier.

I went to Minneapolis to visit friends from college. It was so fun, especially considering I surprised all of them (except for one) and I got their reactions on video. I just got back and immediately went to work the next day so it is kind of jarring going from having fun and soaking up midwest sun to doing my normal boring work.

Highlights of the trip
  • Got a free piano lesson. My former roommate's boyfriend is a piano teacher and since I started my new nanny job, the piano teacher (in not so many words) basically said I should re-learn how to play so I could help her with her piano playing
  • Went tubing in the Apple River and did not lose anything. Last time I went to that river I lost my glasses (which was a big deal considering I was the designated driver of that trip and became effectively blind); however, this time my friend who was visiting from California at the same time lost her brand new iPhone XR that her father just paid for in full because she broke the last one. She's not normally irresponsible or anything like that it's just that river takes no survivors. Otherwise tubing was pleasant and relaxing.
  • Played games. I bought a game called For the Girls and it was so much fun to play. I liked being able to stay in and keep us all together. The plan earlier was to purchase tickets for the new Lion King movie, but a lot of us weren't going to be able to make it to the late showings that were still available. I suggested we stay in and played a game instead. Doing so much during my entire stay was fun but being able to relax and just spend time in one another's company was so much nicer than wasting our time watching a movie together.
  • Went to Minnehaha Falls. It was so beautiful. The last time I went it was in the winter time so they were completely frozen and barely trickling. They were just as gorgeous in the summer as they were in the winter. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to take any pictures because I left my phone at the house.
  • Visited the Como Zoo again. Every time I'm in Minnesota I take the chance to visit the zoo. I love it for many reasons the most important of course for being free and depending on donations. I'm used to going there in the winter time so it was nice being able to see all of the summer animals outside. It was very pleasant outside as well. I love going to the zoo there because here in Houston it's just too hot to be enjoyable.I'm linking a "candid" photo I took in the conservatory where posed photography is not allowed.
During that whole trip, I spent quite a bit on Caribou Coffee. It's my guilty pleasure and I only allowed myself to indulge because I can't get it here. Overall, a lovely little vacation before I have to buckle down into working full time and going back to school part time.

Ko-Fi

foreverdawning: Nikki Reed as Rosalie Hale sporting a braid with a dark background (rosie3)
I finally bit the bullet and turned my Ko-Fi from a supporter to a creator page. I even opened up $5 writing commissions because that's just how I am I guess. (Here's a link if you'd like to take a look)

Bitching about my life (as usual lol) )

I'm so tired. After watching Marie Kondo's Tidying Up show I realized the way she folds is actually impossible to replicate on an everyday basis. I think since she calls it her KonMari method, everyone needs to make their own personal method. Trying to copy how she does it exactly could drive any normal person insane.
Anyway, I've gotten my room straightened out (mostly) which is nice. I'm naturally a very clean person, but I've been switching rooms a lot because of guests and what not, the stuff has just sort of piled up.

I wanted to be able to finish my second chapter of my fic earlier today but better late than never. I'll probably do that then head to bed.
