Absorbed in Silence eBook Review
The premise is there is a woman who goes on a silent retreat and sees another woman she likes. They agree to play charades and go on "dates" with one another while there. If they're caught speaking they get kicked out (and presumably are refused a refund) so it's very important they not say a single word to one another. The third day, they play a game of Scrabble and kiss. The protagonist accidentally whispers "Please" while the leader of the silent retreat is in ear shot. They are brought into the retreat office and scolded. But at the last second the protagonist makes a long confession about how Em is "the sun" and that she wants to spend her days learning more about her. Then she pleads with the silent retreat leader to let Em stay since she never actually said anything.
Em shushes the protagonist and says that she'd love to accompany her to a bed and breakfast an hour from the retreat. Then it just...ends. I wasn't expecting the piece to be long but the book really felt like an idea that was meant to be fleshed out but the author got lazy and just wanted it to be over. I didn't actually believe the two of them actually wanted to get to know one another outside of the retreat. The impression I got was that they were both just spending time in one another's company until the retreat came to an end. I wouldn't be surprised if Em and the protagonist spent one night together actually speaking then realized they didn't actually have anything in common.
Anyway, I'm glad I finished it finally and can move on to something else more worthwhile. Despite leaving this glowing review, if you want to check out the book for yourself I'm linking it here. It's back to it's regularly priced $1.99 if you're interested.
