I started a new system with the kids this week. Since class is starting for me this week it's of the upmost importance that I am not late so I devised a point system to reward the children for getting out the door on-time.
I based the point system off of the point system they made us do in elementary and middle school. The idea is that you're supposed to teach children consequences for their actions and all that boring stuff. After a few attempts and failures at implementing the point game, I finally have it down to a science.
There are two ways to earn points. In the morning, you get one point for going out the door on-time (7:30 AM) and lose a point if you're late (after 7:31 AM). After school, when I pick them up, they each have a chance to earn two more points in the afternoon so long as they do everything they need to do as well as be on their best behavior. For example, the youngest one has to practice piano everyday so the points system has actually got her motivated to do that as well. As long as her brother does not tease her, he gets to 'earn" his two extra afternoon points.
And what do they get as a reward for their efforts? Different prizes worth different amounts of points. I went to FiveBelow and Dollar General and spent at least $40 on those potential prizes. The kids are a bit spoiled because they immediately said the prizes were lame. But I'm fine with that. They're playing along and I think they secretly do enjoy the point game.
