January 2, 2026 - Stranger Things, Buffy and Angel

Haven't done much the last few days, outside of knee exercises and binge watch television shows.

Finished Stranger Things S5 - which provided an apt and satisfying finale to the series. I don't really see it continuing after it. The finale did a good job of completing all the character arcs. And allowed for some nice character moments - specifically Will Byers coming out that he's gay (so is the actor apparently). That was actually moving.

It's definitely not for everyone? But nothing is? I enjoyed it - it was off beat, and nostalgic. I liked it a lot better than Alien: Earth - which I gave up on rather quickly. What it excels at - that a lot of others don't - is the blend of inter-generational arcs. We've the adults, the teens, and kids - and the series follows all of them without focusing too much on just one, or undermining any. This is rare in the genre, often one or the other is short-sighted, and neither was here. Is it flawed in places? Yes. I mean it does rely heavily on the classic "evil mad scientist government conspiracy trope", which admittedly was popular in the 1980s. The US Military and the US Government being portrayed as sociopathic bad guys throughout, probably was a bit over the top, but other than that? I enjoyed it. It does drag at times and gets a little too into nerdy 1980s references, but that's also part of the fun.

To say much more would spoil everybody, and we can't have that. While I enjoyed the series? I don't foresee myself rewatching it, analyzing it, writing meta on it, joining the fandom, or reading fanfic. It was fun, but there's not a lot there to analyze. The general theme - if there is one - is that differences should be celebrated, and people who are different, even have conflicts, can come together and become the best of friends given the right circumstances and motivation.

Have gotten more or less to the game changer episodes in Angel S3 ("Lullaby") and Buffy S6 ("Tabula Rasa"). After those two episodes the dynamic of both series changes dramatically, as does the character relationships and plot lines. So it's a good place to pause. I liked "Lullaby" more than I remembered - and it does a rather good job of completing Darla's arc, and defining how Darla and Angelus view love and why they don't think vampires can love. Read more... )
I honestly think the writers on both Angel and Buffy were playing with what it meant to be a demon, and what is really good or evil, and the idea of love. Also the concept of redemption. Could they redeem someone like Angel - who they'd written as the absolute worst vampire that ever lived? And what about Spike who is more ambiguous evil - who can love, if unwisely, and unwell? Can you redeem him without a soul - without screwing up Angel's arc or Darla's or upending the verse? Part of the reason these series still resonates, and is still studied in various sphere of academia long after it ended is that the writers actually wrestled with these questions and didn't just go the standard formulaic route or rigid rules of the verse route that you see in most television series and science fiction and fantasy. Sometimes questioning the rules of your own verse - pays off. It did here.

Think about it? People are still debating various aspects of these series years later, I'm not sure this is true of all television series. And I certainly feel no inclination to do it with Stranger Things, Slow Horses, Andor, or various others that I've watched and enjoyed over the years. YMMV of course. I'm willing to admit - we all perceive and enjoy things differently - and that makes life cool and at times challenging.

Books read, 2025

Looks like I made about 66 books last year. The number is a bit fungible as that includes manga collections, Hugo reads - what's the difference between novellas and novelettes, etc, and some other things that just make my head hurt. I temporarily set aside some stuff due to events in December and switched to comfort reads, i.e. Terry Pratchett, and seem to be continuing in on that for the foreseeable future until something else distracts me.

The list is inverted so I don't have to scroll through it when I finish a new book. Much easier to update that way!

The year began with continuing Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series re-read and continued from there. I'm not going to talk about things in detail, but will discuss anything if people want to talk about something in comments. A few notable things, though....

01/29 The Last Nine Days of The Bismarck, CS Forester (HB,NF). This is one that came across my desk at work as an interlibrary loan. First, the author. Forester of the Hornblower series. It's a short book, you can probably polish it off, uninterrupted, in three or four hours. VERY interesting read! Obviously C.S. is a master of naval writing, and this book is a good example. The British were desperate to not let the Bismarck get out into the Atlantic where it could wreak havoc on all Allied shipping, they dedicated pretty much everything they had to finding and sinking that ship. And while they did succeed, it was quite the fight. And quite the read.

02/18 Tokyo Vice, Jake Addelstein (nf). This book is an autobiographical book about Jake's career as a crime beat reporter in Tokyo, mainly reporting about yakuza activity in Tokyo and Japan. It took me a while to compose that sentence, because it's a complicated book. I like books about Japan, I like Japanese culture. And this book is real. In places, it can be rather disturbing as it is honestly written. There is violence and murder in it, it spans years. Will I re-read it? No. It expanded my view of Japan and was interesting, not that I needed any additional prompting to know not to get involved with the yakuza.

02/26 Adios Muchachos, Daniel Chavarria. This is an amusing read, and a one-shot book, though Chavarria has written many books. It's about a Havana prostitute with an amazing butt and a rigged bicycle that she can make fall apart on command. She uses it to 'have an accident' in front of a mark to seduce them and get them into a longish-term relationship. She has a whole script she works on her marks, a program of seduction to make it long-term to make it very profitable, and it works quite well for her and her mother, but with the current mark it gets complicated when someone, a non-Cuban, accidentally dies, and she and the mark have to figure out how to deal with the body in a way to avoid police involvement. As layers get peeled back things become increasingly complicated and amusing for the reader.

02/28 The Shambling Guide to New York City, Mur Lafferty. Also The Shambling Guide to New Orleans. Young woman needs a job, replies to an advert seeking a writer for a traveler's guide for NYC. The office tries to put her off, saying they're really not what they're looking for, but she's insistent as rent is coming due and she is desperate for the job. Finally they hire her on a provisional basis. Turns out they are publishing a 'differently animated' guide for undead, werewolves, vampires, etc.: i.e. a world that she didn't really know existed. VERY entertaining! Mur is an excellent writer, I highly recommend her! Shambling Guide continues the series, and I think she intended the series to go on - and it may yet - but it ends at two books.

Andy Weir's Artemis and Project Hail Mary. I read these two books back-to-back. I read The Martian when it came out and really enjoyed it, loved the movie. But these books? I have to say that I'm feeling that Andy is, to me, coming off as a one trick pony and feels too much to be writing different versions of the same character of the same astronaut from Martian. Only this time it's a black girl on the Moon. And now it's a white teacher who's now Earth's last hope. Competence porn. I have no problem with a NASA astronaut going to the Moon or Mars being hyper-competent. Their life and the lives of everyone else on the mission depends on their knowing everything about pretty much every aspect of all of their equipment depends on that competency. But a teen girl born on the moon? Yes, she'd be taught from an early age about emergency drills and such, but she wouldn't have an intimate knowledge about a lot of that stuff. And the guy in Hail Mary? Yes, he has a laptop of everything ever digitized on Earth. Good luck searching it! Ask any librarian how much fun they have searching for information. Sorry, those two books rate as weak sauce for me and aren't going to rate very high as likely re-reads.

The rest of the books:

Check-In Post - Jan 2nd 2026

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What are your crafting goals for 2026?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

SquidgeWorld Maintenance Take 2

I think we've finally uncovered the last issue ::knock wood::

First off, a couple of months back, some of the internal components of SquidgeWorld failed, and we had to move the drives and RAM to a new piece of hardware.  That hardware, while slower, was working fine until the internal disk drive became corrupted - so earlier this week we ran through a disk correction, which led to a database file corruption and then cleanup.

Then yesterday things started to go pear-shaped again, and subsystems like the search function started to crash.  After a bit of diagnosing, it appears that not only had that hardware fan gone bad, but it corrupted the RAM chips as well.  Those RAM chips seemed to work for the most part, but during some of the intense processing, would bomb the entire server.

So this morning we've replaced the RAM chips and brought the Archive back up.  And so far ::knock wood:: things appear to be working just fine.

Because we should (at least theoretically) be good now, I've also re-enabled Downloads.  Give the server a little try and let me know if you find anything hinky.

Yuletide Reveals 2025

[community profile] yuletide is now over for another year! I did, in fact, have the misfortune to turn up at the exact wrong moment to catch the reveals bug on the 24th, so I saw the identity of my gift-writer, although as they were someone that I only had the vaguest idea of having seen the name around AO3 somewhere before, it didn't really spoil anything, thankfully.

I had hoped to do some little treats, as I got on and got my fic done as soon as I could, but I moved instead. However, as I cut out one section from my assignment and posted it separately in Madness, I did technically still post a treat as well!

I wrote The Winslow Boy for [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt, so I was not super anonymous really, for anyone who actually looked that far, but I had a lovely time spending a month or so rewatching the film and coming up with different scenarios from their prompts and my head for a 5 + 1 Times fic. By the end, I decided, though, that the "+1" just increasingly didn't sit right with the rest, so I split it off, hence the Madness treat.

I wanted to include the Winslows lose the case AU if I could, as I knew [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt was keen on that idea - and as I thought would it might rather put paid to any Catherine/Robert, at least for quite some time, it fitted well into the format as the "one time they didn't" (meet again) (although never at any point was that categorical). It did work out well and was maybe the most Rattigan section in the end, I thought, so I had to post it even after I cut it. (Although had I realised sooner I was going to set it loose alone, I'd have found a way to make the start a little less in media res, although tbf, it's an unlikely one to appeal to anyone who doesn't know canon).

Anyway, here it is:

Bluetooth Sleep Headphones

I have the kind of insomnia old-timey bards would write songs about, so I listen to boring audio books on these every night to keep my brain from spinning out of control. Lately I've been wearing them like a sleep mask - like the model here - and WOW, that's helped even more than when I wore them like a headband! These things have been a life saver: comfy enough for side sleeping, not too loud like some of my old speakers, and they only cost $20. Plus my original pair lasted a good 2 years before one of the wires went loose.

Please note that these do run on the big side, but that works out great if you have a big head like me. :D

Agent Mulder believes we are not alone.

+ Two days into the new year, two episodes into season 1 of The X-Files. I know we all agree Gillian Anderson is hot stuff, but are we talking about it enough?? Also, I remember being very annoyed at Scully's reluctance to believe in the supernatural as the show went on, given how much she'd experienced by then, but WOW does she have the patience of a saint in the beginning. Mulder is lucky he's cute. Also also, they really did smoosh these two together like a pair of dolls they wanted to kiss right from the start. Shippers must have been eating the wallpaper by episode five.

Can't wait for less UFOs, more bizarre horror cases.

+ Went to the local mall with my mom today, and I am now the proud owner of a 50% off memory foam pillow. Fingers crossed I vibe with it.

+ While my mom was looking for things for her calendar, I happened to spy a shiny new hardback of Mona Awad's Bunny, with funky pink bunny endpapers and sprayed edges. And so, silly me, with the goal of reading my damn physical books, came home with yet another physical book. Le sigh. At least I'm 98% sure I will vibe with this book something fierce.

+ Just did the final tagging for the last check in post of [community profile] rec_cember. I'll be tallying the recs and fandoms covered tomorrow but spoiler: it's A LOT. If you're looking for something to read, I highly recommend having a look at the tag set. We got a really good variety.

+ Stranger Things has finally ended. I feel like they yanked Nancy out of the fic I recommend a couple of days ago and shoved her in there, and that was endlessly amusing. I just sat there squinting at it for a minute, going full headtilt. They very much indulged in a lengthy wrap-up that some will hate and others appreciate very much *cough* fandom *cough*. The final battle was extremely 80s. Also, what was the costuming department smoking? I am saving this quote for later. )

Lots of good stuff that creative types can play with without fear of any sort of legal reprisal! The first appearance of Betty Boop, and the original version of Disney's Pluto, then called Rover. It's interesting to see the evolutions of characters, like how Mickey evolved from Steamboat Willy.

All my 2025 stories on hope in dark times

Hello to all, especially those of you I haven't met here before. I write noblebright novels on hope in dark times, inspired by historical settings. Nearly all of what I write is original fiction, though my Muse occasionally allows me to write fanfic. All my stories are free. My writings are available in various places: my website, blog, AO3, and SqWA.

I've just posted at my Dreamwidth journal the story summaries and links to all the fic (mainly historical fantasy inspired by late antiquity) that I released in 2025. The stories are T-rated, featuring friendships, platonic life-partnerships, and romantic pairings (f/m and m/m). Here's my boilerplate content warning. I'd love to hear what you think of the stories.

Over 100,000 words of new fiction.

The days leading up to story reveals were spent frantically beta-ing a couple of fairly long fics that required a canon primer, so I had given up on the idea of writing a treat. But I felt so blessed by my last-minute crossover treat and the fact that my main gift was in a much rarer fandom than I’d been expecting, that it gave me a sort of second wind – after reveals, obviously, but there was still Madness. And thus:

[community profile] snowflake_challenge is back, with lovely new banners:

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #1: The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

My intro post from a year ago was mostly current but was missing Elis & John a couple of things that feel too relevant not to mention, so, I’m including an updated one below. As for the other challenge questions:

I love the little bright splash of fannishness that Snowflake brings to the start of the year – it always leads to interesting fandom reflections (my own and other people’s), getting to read/watch/look at things I wouldn’t have come across or taken the plunge on otherwise (fic/vids but also trying new canons), creating things I otherwise wouldn’t have created (one tangible highlight: a couple of years ago I wrote a pantoum, a poetic form I hadn’t tried before, for Snowflake’s “try something new” day, and it was actually published this year, which is pretty cool!), and usually also new friends. Which I guess has also answered the question of what I hope to gain from it this year :)

Aro Volturi (book version)

In the book canon, the Volturi have really unusual eyes, kind of cloudy(???) or something (honestly idk, I read the books ages ago, but for some reason that specific detail stuck with me), so I tried to show that

P.S I actually really love this detail, it’s like it shows that time does affect vampires

Happy New Year!

Your annual reminder that a bunch of cool books just got released into public domain and have been beautifully typeset by Standard Ebooks. (Apparently Nancy Drew is in public domain now—perhaps I'll finally learn what the fuss is about.)

In the last two weeks I've mostly been reading Weak Hero fanfic. I saw both seasons of the drama recently and I was so grabbed by things left unsaid that I had to look up fanfic for it. (And of course, as I do in any new fandom, my first exploration was sorted by word count).

Aside from that, I finished Fluent Forever and it rearranged my brain on language learning. (First victim: Slovenian.) It mostly tells you how to make effective flashcards and what to focus on and in which order to get the most out of learning a new language—and then why the proposed methods work. (Incidentally, I also learned that mačka comes from Hungarian macska. Makes sense though. See: history of magyarization.)

I also continued my read through of Anderson's cookbooks with Tokyo Stories, which I liked a little less than the bento and the izakaya cookbooks. The recipes aren't as approachable as those in his other cookbooks, but the in-depth treatment of Tokyo cuisine(s) is very cool. I liked it a lot.

I accidentally slipped the Semantic Error volume that was supposed to go into this post into the previous post, so that's a wrap for the reading in 2025! 129 books, which is the same as the previous year. I might come back with a list of favourites in a few days. Until then, enjoy the fresh energy of the new year!
